Iran's "IFPnews" reported on August 28 that China Customs recently allowed Iran to export shrimp to China. Officials of the Iranian Veterinary Bureau said that these exports are in compliance with Chinese laws, regulations and standards, and China supports them, paving the way for direct shipments.
According to Undercurrentnews, a London-based global seafood news site, China is the largest market for Iranian shrimp, importing about 30,000 tons of shrimp a year. Iranian exporters have relied on re-exporting shrimp to China through Vietnam before gaining market access. Exports through Vietnam have become more difficult as China has cracked down on transshipment.
Iran is trying to exploit the aquaculture potential of the southern coast to make seafood a major export item. The country is working on joint projects with several countries, including France, to promote seafood production.
